Award Categories

Since 2019, SEMA has offered five annual awards for teaching excellence, graduate student presentation, and scholarly achievement to recognize outstanding contributions to these fields by its members:

  1. The Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes achievement in the teaching of medieval subjects in the past three years (prize: $200 gift certificate from Scholar’s Choice).
  2. The Award for Scholarly Achievement recognizes achievement in publication (articles and/or books) in a field of medieval scholarship (prize: $200 gift certificate from Scholar’s Choice).
  3. The Award for Best First Book is given for the best first book in a field of medieval scholarship (prize: $200 gift certificate from Scholar’s Choice).
  4. The Lorraine Kochanske Stock Endowment for Innovation in Medieval Studies (prize: grants of up to $1500 in support of research travel, expenses for necessary scholarly materials, innovative teaching, or publication subvention)
  5. The Graduate Student Award for a Paper Delivered at SEMA (prize: The award will consist of: a waiver of SEMA’s conference fee and membership dues, plus one night at the conference hotel, and a $50 per diem. The winner should take up the award within the next two years.)

Nominations

Nominations may be made for the above awards by fellow members of SEMA in good standing, by colleagues, or by self application.

For all awards, please send nominations and submissions by the listed deadlines to Anne LatowskySEMA President, alatowsk@usf.edu. Nominations should be made as early as possible to give maximum time to nominees to prepare their materials.

Award Judging

The Selection Committee for these awards is composed of members of the Executive Council of SEMA.
